Laura Petersen is a reporter covering natural resource management, conservation and science for Greenwire, an online newswire produced by Environment & Energy Publishing.
Based in Washington D.C., Petersen spends a good deal of time on Capitol Hill covering hearings on national parks, fish and wildlife, satellites and appropriations. Her current focus is on oceans, marine technology and fisheries management.
Fascinated by the natural world, she strives to translate scientific research about ecology, wildlife biology and climate change into engaging and accessible stories.
Petersen earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from U.C. San Diego in 2005 and a master’s degree in science journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2010. In between, she was a community newspaper reporter in San Diego, Calif., covering Solana Beach and Del Mar, two small beach towns with big development and environmental issues.
